Hi Gary R/R used a common go-kart mechanical brake. The first problem i found with that brake was chatter. It was caused by out of round and / or off center drums. When i assembled the wheels and drums and ground the drums. on center, the brakes worked much better. The second problem is they are not very strong. There may be stronger brakes out there, but be careful because the retract KR will nose over pretty easily. I think that is why so many have been converted to fixed gear. My KR-2 is still a retract, but i have beefed up the retract linkage to remove all the slop (clearances), and i replaced the cast aluminum spar attach fittings with welded steel fittings, because the original outboard R/R spar fittings both cracked. Whatever you do, please check those outboard retract fittings for cracks. You may not have experianced these gear problems if your KR is very light. My KR2 is a 2064cc turbo, streached and weighs 600 lbs empty. That is still very light compaired to todays corvair powered fixed gear streached KRs. Hopefully someone else can help with the CFI question. Happy flying
