Gaston's is a one way runway with a left circling approach and departure
along the same path. It is a really well maintained, rather large grass
strip. I have seen king air 200s parked there. As far as climb out, it's
not to bad actually as long as you follow the valley out. I've been in and
out of there in my old 150 several times with friends. My biggest word of
caution is watch for other aircraft as there are several that frequent
there that do not have electrical systems. Almost all of them carry a
handheld but their transmitters are sometimes iffy. Since the approach and
departure corridor overlap with not much wiggle room, you want to make sure
your alone as you start a descending turn off of the downwind. The reason
for the one way runway is a hill with large power lines on it that prevent
takeoff/landing from the west. I usually fly just inside the river on base
part of the circle and it ends up with a good point for the final. It tends
to look a little spookier than what it really is.

Just as a word of caution though, I have seen quite a few aircraft hauled
off of there on a trailer over the years, usually heading to the salvage
yard. Don't underestimate it but certainly don't let it spook you late in
the approach. From what I've heard from others there, getting spooked
about getting down and stopped once committed has lead to a good number of
the accidents. The road at the end of the runway would be a little bump
but there is still a little bit of overrun territory just past the road.

If your comfortable on a grass strip this airport will not be a problem and
I have always had a good time there. It is a tad bit on the pricey side but
it's worth it in my opinion.
