Ken Cottle drove over to Pratt, Kansas about eight years ago to buy one of Sam Bailey's three KR's. The one available was the one Sam kept for himself but, having gone on to other things, Sam his one remaining KR-1 on the market. Sam, some may remember, used to do an aerobatic routine with his KR-1's on various local holidays and fly-ins. I've never heard it explained why he built three identical KR-1's. Of those three, Ken has the one I mention, another is hanging in an aviation museum somewhere around Pratt, Kansas, and Marc Baca has the third one in L.A. Anyway, one of the many improvements Ken did to Sam's KR-1 was add VG's. Extremely easy to install, he said they worked as advertised. Ken, now into his 80's, is not flying his KR much these days. Instead, he's been flying an ultralight called a Howland, H-4 "Chimp". It's a copy of a Champ, goes just as fast, but is lighter, cheaper, and quite possibly is more fun to fly. (That wouldn't be hard to do as "fun" is about the last word that comes to mind regarding flying a Champ - imho) Ken mentioned he might attend the Gathering this year since it's so close to his home in Columbia - about a hundred miles away I think. If anyone is interested in buying a ready-to-go KR-1 at what I'm sure will be a very fair price, send me an email and I'll put you in touch with Ken.
