"When you glue on your turtle decks, both front and rear:"
Hello Henni,
This is obviously a choice for you to make but I would recommend that you make
at least these two components easily removable. The entire top of my airplane
is removable from the rear of the spinner to the rudder spars. The main reason
for this is maintenance both while you build and in the future. Being able to
get to both sides and bottom of the fuselage to run wires, hoses, clean or
whatever is highly desirable. I simply added duct tape to the top longerons at
both locations, added the foam, sanded to the shape I wanted, and glassed it. I
wrapped the glass down about an inch for the front deck and use four
countersunk screws to buried anchor nuts for each side. My rear deck extends
down over the top longerons only about an 1/8 of an inch. I have two pins in
the fuselage that captures two slots in the front of my rear deck and two short
pieces of piano hinge in the back. I have a separate fairing that starts just
in front of the tail surfaces and fastens to the narrow end of the af
t deck. To remove the aft deck I remove the tail surface fairing which gives
me access to pull the hinge pins, lift the rear out of the hinge and slide it
back an inch and I can lift it off. By doing it this way there is a
longitudinal seam that is not flush and runs the length of the plane but this
is exactly what I wanted. When I go to wash it the first time or if I happen to
get surprised by a rain shower in the air or on the ground I want the water to
run off and hopefully not end up on the inside.
Hope this makes sense, if not I can send a photo.
