I actually experienced an in flight fire several years ago. It was during a biannual flight review in a rented Skyhawk.
Lucky for me I was near enough to the airport to be able to get back and land safely. I stayed calm and shut all electrical off (It smelled like an electrical fire) and shut everything else down, and was able to vent a good part of the smoke out of the cabin. Here is the lesson of my failure. In my preflight inspection, I noticed and pointed out several issues and most of them were electrical. The plane would not have passed an annual inspection as it really didn't pass my preflight. However, due to schedule issues I was anxious to get my biannual completed and allowed the FIB plane owner to talk me into you g ahead. So, trust your head. When your head and experience says NO! Don't let others or your rush to get home or get a flight in overcome your trained instincts and knowledge. I was very lucky that day. I was close enough to the field to get back, I was able to clear the smoke and make a good but not safe landing. Don't let one dumb decision ruin your life.
