The old wooden Sensinich props were typically lightly sanded and varnished with a decent spar varnish as needed.

The TruValue I stopped at didn't have the "varnish" in the brand recommended and said he can hardly get it anymore. I went with the polyurethane of the same brand and applied my first coat this afternoon. I did a light sanding with 220 grit to remove all the bug squash and most of the black paint on the back side and applied 1 coat to the entire prop. I have it hanging by the center hole and it appears to be very slightly out of balance. Maybe an extra coat or two on the light side will help the balance.
