Hi Robert,

We did it with the kids back in 98.

I would recommend AvTours that fly to the show as a package.
http://www.avtours.com.au/
It is a little more expensive, but so much worth it for the stress factor.
Not sure about these days, but it would fly direct to the airshow from Aust.
I think 9/11 may have changed that. I think you can make arrangements to fly
back at a time that you want if going other places after the show.

We made all our own arrangements to the show, and you would always be
guessing what to do and where to go.

We flew SYD- LAX then to Milwaukee, we had to find the shuttle bus to take
us to Oshkosh, wait an hour for the bus to go. Arrive at the Wisconsin UNI
(highly recommend) dropped off and then had to find out what the heck we
where to go next. Once we found the relevant office and persons, it was all
good from there.

No matter what, you will LOVE the event. The only down side is, never will
you get to see such a show here like that one. Our airshows are only a
fly-in as a comparison. I want to go back again one day. A mind blowing
experience

Cheers,

Brian

Second choice would be Chicago, Illinois. Rent a car there and drive an
extra hour as compared to Milwaukee.
Madison, Wisconsin is an hour and a half away as we'll.
We spent a lot of time lookingas for flights from Dallas, Texas to Oshkosh
this past summer for our daughter to come and stay with us at Oshkosh.
All of the direct flights were to Chicago or Milwaukee that were close. My
daughter chose connecting flights. That was a nightmare for her coming to
Oshkosh and flying back home. Coming, her flight was a little late landing
in Chicago, Air Wisconsin her connecting flight to Appleton Wisconsin was
held up because a tail light wasn't working, no one to repair it so the
pilot was trying to get it repaired himself so they could depart for the
short night flight to Appleton.
What a joke it became. That company had an issue on her way home that caused
her to have to run through the terminal in Chicago to catch her connecting
flight to Dallas.

Bottom Line, try for a direct flight from LA to this list of nearest
commercial jet airports:

APPLETON, WISCONSIN. 20 minutes to Oshkosh. Just north of Oshkosh

GREENBAY, WISCONSIN. 45 to 60 minutes to Oshkosh. north of Oshkosh

MADISON, WISCONSIN. 90 minutes to Oshkosh. SWest of Oshkosh

MILWAUKEE, WISCONSIN. 90 minutes to Oshkosh. South of Oshkosh

CHICAGO, ILLINOIS. About 120 to 150 minutes to Oshkosh. South of
Oshkosh

You can rent a car at any of these airports as long as you have a good
credit card.

You can camp out in the EAA campground on the airport for about $20 US
dollars per night if you are an EAA member.
You can go to a local store and purchase a tent for about $30.00 to $60.00
depending on what size you need. There are public showers, places to buy
food if you need to eat, if not don't worry about that! ; )
Or you can rent a bedroom in someone's home that lives in Oshkosh. Check
with EAA for a list or see EAA magazine for offers in ads in the back pages.
Or as Robert says try for a motel room at a minimum of $100.00 per night but
most I talk to are paying a lot more than that these days.

There is a museum to see, nightly live shows on the airport, nightly movies
in the campground and lots of activity all over the airport. I doubt she
will have time to get bored.

If you have any more questions just ask and ye may receive!
