It sounds and looks like I missed another great gathering. Once again, the gremlin that has kept me from attending so many gatherings was at work keeping me from this one. It if wasn't that weather, it was work issues and then the final two surprises that kept me home. First surprise was when my son came upstairs last Thursday afternoon and announced that Grand Pa ( my father) was at the front door. Now that may not sound that surprising except for given the fact that my dad lives over 300 miles north of me and that he has spent much of this summer in the hospital with serious heart problems, to have my dad show up unannounced was an extreme surprise for me. his reason for showing up ? A reunion event another 130 miles south of me. Then I wrenched my back. Im guessing I tore some lower muscles. Im still on ice and heat. Extream low ceilings and weather stayed over eastern Kentucky all last week and the sun didnt come out until Sunday morning. For those who dont know the length and extent of the gremlins that pop up each year at gathering time, let me just say that I feel like I have the Mario Andretti curse or something. In fact, those that attended the 2010 Gathering know that the gremiln struck just days before the gathering and to the extent of that gremlin left me with a crushed right foot and ankle and broken right wrist. So I showed up in crutches. Thanks to Mike Warner for flying my KR to the event and thanks to Dan Heath for supplying a much needed instrument that allowed me to get my KR there. ok, Im jealous and may (may) have to put up with Mark Jones giving me the business for not making it. All that and I still admit that MJ has my favorite KR and I think anyone wanting a training wheel KR, that MJ is the one to copy. Rob Schmitt, sorry I missed you. Dan Heath, thanks for offering to pick me up, Steve Glover, Mark Langford and all the others left unmentioned, sorry I missed you too. Ok, enough of me crying in my milk. As the losing team says. wait till next year. It rained from just outside Atlanta to about 25 miles from my house and by then it was dark. I was fearful of my life, but then, totally convinced that I made the right choice to leave the Black Bird where she was safe. Even with the continual agonizing over having to leave my Bird at home, it was a great Gathering. Russ's Baby was certainly a hit and a very appropriate version of the KR2 for the 40th anniversary. He took Best Paint, Best KR, and Peoples' Choice. In my humble opinion, he deserved every one of them. You will see his plane front and center of the big Gathering picture that Dave Mullins took, like they did several years ago. Getting 10 KRs to show up with the weather so bad, shows how much the Builders want to contribute to this event, some of them even risk their life and come very close to losing it. But in this case, I should have used the plural "lives", because apparently Steve has several of them. As I saw him walking around the Gathering and talking to people, it was a bit "surreal" because you could never tell that he had been through that horrible ordeal. He always had a smile on his face and when asked about the accident, would find a way to put a positive slant on it, like, "I was going to replace that firewall anyway". He was an inspiration to me, just by his being there. See N64KR at <http://krbuilder.org/> http://KRBuilder.org - Then click on the pics See you at the 2013 - KR Gathering in Mt.
