You don't actually need that piece of aluminum unless you are using a "standard" engine mount like an old HAPI or others that fasten toward the middle of the firewall. My motor mount was designed to connect up to the corners of the firewall, which is a more efficient and stronger design than fastening it to toward the center, and very little aluminum is needed to back it up. Take a look at http://www.n56ml.com/kfuse.html to see what I mean about "minimal". My hayfield incidence managed to tweak the mount a little bit, but this connection is still fine. This little backing plate weighs just about nothing, and is cut out of scrap from another piece of 1/8" 6061-T6. Just a thought...
