I'm not sure there is an "optimum" location but the Diehl plans say to locate the castings close in or next to the fuselage as I recall. I moved mine out several inches from the fuselage to give me a wider gear track for better ground handling. With my 30 inch Diehl legs it places my wheels very near the ends of the center section wing. My bird is heavy and I've had no problems with that placement in 450 hours of flying.
