End grain balsa is a well known core material in the yacht manufacturing
industry. It is the perfect core material for the job. It is very strong for
its weight and is closed cell which means it does not absorb water or rot. I
hava an article here in an aviation mag where the builder did exactly what
you have there, made up ply formers and "strip planked" the fuselage of his
plane with end grain balsa and glassed over it. He then glassed the inside
to form a perfect composite.
I bet that fuselage that you have is stronger than a spruce and ply KR.
