I don't have my books on me right now, but everything I have read suggests
that short span and short chord lifting surfaces will end up costing more
in drag than they contribute in lift.  Aside from flying wing designs, I
don't believe there are any modern lifting body designs.  I can try to dig
up a reference tonight if you're interested.
