I have very long leads on the wiring harness for the EGT and CHT that comes with the Dynon D10 and I asked Dynon if there was any issue with shortening the leads to the proper length. This is not the thermal couple lead coming from the sensor, they are the wire leads going from the end of the sensor lead ( your 12" leads, (never saw any that short)), to the instrument. They said that I could make the wires on the instrument end, any length that I needed them to be.
I got a switch from Westach to switch the EGT/CHT sensors into the instrument, and the harness for that is very long, so apparently Westach does not care how long they are either. You CANNOT mess with the length of the thermocouple wire. If it has already been altered, which I suspect it has, it is no good and must be replaced.
