Mike,

Having over 250 hours when this occured, I do not believe this is unusual for
a VW. I talked and listened with both Steve Bennett and Joe Horvath. I've sat
in on many of Steve's seminars at the KR Gatherings and at Oshkosh. The VW
engine cylinder heads are typlically good for about 250 hours before you need
to pull them off and take a look. I did regular valve checks, oil and filiter
change religiously every 25 hours. I also do a compression test at the annual.

I still think a cylinder head recondition and 2 exhaust valves at 250 hours for
only $200 is pretty good. I can afford that cost.

No.

It's a sign that the valves haven't been adjusted frequently and/or as
necessary.

Lean is good. As long as you are at 75% power or below there's nothing
you can do with the mixture control that can harm your engine, except
running it too rich.
