Hey Guys,
I found another squawk on N357CJ over the weekend. I discovered a slight
bind in the left aileron. That in it's self was not a big deal as I had
installed a washer that was there for a spacer on the wrong side of the heim
bearing at the aileron connection. As I was putting the bolt back together I
inadvertently leaned on the aileron and saw some flex at the hing line. I
started to investigate it much further and disassembled the linkage again so I
could turn the aileron all the way vertical to check all the connection screws.
This now goes back to what I mentioned a couple weeks ago about not trusting
wood structure connection points. I found evey single screw through the aileron
hing both into the wing and the aileron to be loose to some degree. With the
screws at the linkage area to be the worst. Some were only 1/4 turn and others
were nearly a full turn. This also included the counter balance connection
bracket. I don't feel that these connection were done incompetently, they have
nylock nuts floxed to the back side of their spars and were marked with nail
polish for movement. The previous way that I did inspection was by checking
visually and manually for movement. The new procedure is to put a screw driver
to the screws to check. Really only another 20 min to insure my survival. Take
a close look at things, you never know what you might find.
