Lets not forget also that there are 2 meter (VHF) and 70cm (UHF) ham radio repeaters all over the world, and the same transceiver used for APRS can be used to send a MAYDAY call also. All it takes is adding repeater frequencies along the route of your flight plan. I program them into my 40 memory Handy-Talky and just go from the lowest to the highest memory channel as I travel out (and vs-vs). APRS is great, but Amateur Radio offers much more than just that. I highly recommend that everyone get a Technician class license and at LEAST a 2 meter HT.
