Chris, I had a simular problem as you described. I chased the problem for a while and had the same circuit breaker tripping problem. As I recall, the problem turned out to be a frayed wire on the voltage regulator and an intermitten loose connection on the same. One caused the other. hope this helps Jeff York KR2 N839BG
