Eric, Since the spars are the key structural part of the wing, the foam is really only there to provide a place for the skin to bond to. You can use whatever foam you want, though things like location and type of things like fuel tanks will play a part in that decision, ultimately it's up to your own preference, so if you wanted, you could in fact use polystyrene and hot wire is to your liking.
