Steve Eberhart and I launched out from the gathering yesterday to beat the
weather that was forecast for my home airport. Seems the forecasters were
correct. I awoke this morning on my tempurpedic mattress, as opposed to on my
backpacking sleeping mat in my backpacking tent by the lake at the gathering,
to 300' ovc, less than 3 and heavy rain. The low in TN, and high to my NE,
converged right over my house. I wish I had not had to leave but as we know,
weather dictates safety when you are flying. I hope the remaining KR's, as
several left during the day Saturday due to approaching weather, can get out
safely and arrive safely at their destinations. As evidence by the events at
this years gathering, we can replace airplanes we cannot replace friends. Fly
safe.
As for the gathering, Steve and I flew in Thursday early afternoon. With the
help of Larry and his truck, we were able to get all the stuff we crammed into
the airplane in one load...that is a story in and of itself. After getting our
tents set up by the lake, Rich, Steve and I made a barley pop run into Mt.
Vernon. Later Thursday, after the weather allowed, Jeff Scott and Mark L. and
others arrived. The rest of the day is pretty much a blur as barley pops were
consumed and stories told around the lake. Sure hope nobody taped some of
those conversations or we all would be permanently grounded......or at least
should be:-)
On a side note, I can just barely see the treeline out the front windows due to
this cloud bust....vis down to 1500'
Friday and Saturday were your typical KR Gathering days, seeing old friends,
hanging at the airport, looking at airplanes and listening to Larry play his
guitar.....he is GOOD!!
The KR gathering was very valuable to me since I have been working on a set of
revised plans for my next KR "derivative". I was able to bounce my ideas off
several people who are currently incorporating at least one my desired changes
in their current construction. Suffice to say, the one I hope to have
significantly along the way by next years gathering, will incorporate several
things I have learned from being around the KR community and from what I
gleaned from building my KR-2 and my RV. Do me a favor and don't ask.....I'm
sure there will be more to follow from this end:-)
Larry, thanks for hosting the gathering for the last six years. You deserved
that bomber jacket...and I hope Mark Jones was able to collect enough "excess
donations" to get his new engine financed:-) I am sure we will be back to Mt.
Vernon, sooner rather than later. It is a fabulous place to hold the gathering
and I hope you get to do some just hanging out and enjoying yourself next year
with some hangar flying and real flying instead of working your @#$ off.
Plan on the gathering at i39 next year to follow the same kind of structure as
those in the past, when I held it for two years at Lake Barkley, Tommy at Red
Oak and Larry at MVN. It will for the KR crowd and I'll keep all updated as to
the date and other information as thing take structure and finalize.
See all at i39 next year.
