Not gonna laugh, but I think that method just makes a lot of extra work.  I
tried it once and quickly discarded it as just another process to give an
opportunity to screw it all up.  I really believe that putting the slurry on
the foam and then laying up the glass works much better.  Then you have a
solid surface to work with.  You are going to have plenty of opportunities
to sand, so why not cut out one of them.

Yes, the peel ply is a throw away after use.
