hey Guys,
I did a little work on the KR today and wanted to get a flight in but it
was a bit strong and gusty so I waited until about 5 pm when it had dropped to
gusting to 17 kts. I took off figuring on staying up a while hoping it would
settle down. I headed north towards my Dad's. He usually meets me at an airport
about 20 min south of where he lives and I grew up so I had never flown around
the old stomping grounds.
It took about an hour to get up there in the head winds near the Pa./NY
boarder. I was just headed to circle his house and head back home but as i got
closer I realized that a couple mile detour would take me over the farm that I
was born on. I found it easily and it looked just like I remember it,. All the
buildings still look good and the area has hardly changed. Hardly any new
houses in nearly 50 years.
I headed on up the river to my Dad's house enjoying the view that I had
never experienced growing up. His house is right on the river and i laughed
when I saw there was an island right behind his house fairly large (about 20
acres). It was all planted with crops and I couldn't figure out how they got
the machinery over there.
From there I flew over to the old airport that is apparently closed now but
does not seem like any thing bad is happening to it. Yet. I continued on up the
river a couple more miles to where my grand parents had a farm on the river. As
I circled over it for some time I noticed how big the canopy of the trees that
I can remember being planted were. I could clearly see the old river bed lines
in the fields that were filled to over flowing during the flood of "72 and
where I remember putting sticks in the ground to keep track of the river rise
per hour. I circled the ponds and river banks that I spent so much time fishing
(a skill I have lost since lost). I circled the next house that I grew up in a
few streets over from the river. A place that I really loved. It was built of
stone from it's own small river rock quarry and all the rock was split in half
and was full of fossils. It was a lesson in geology just walking around the
house. I always thought I might copy this place someday (I just may have given
myself motivation for my next project)
I had lingered in the area long enough so I continued on up river to
Binghamton NY and then followed rt 81 back south towards home. I was flying at
a pretty slow pace and just truly enjoyed the trip all the way around in a way
that only a small percentage of us will ever know.
I hope that all of you have the opportunity to see the world the way i do.
Blue skies,
Joe Horton
