I have had very good service from mine. I have used it on a number of engines while testing and never had an experience with it not getting a good signal. I guess I will have to look at it again, but I think it doesn't have a replaceable battery. Mine goes dead until I use it, then the display is on for another 6 months to a year. Seems to be charged from the inductive pulses. On the analog tach... maybe try this: get a powerful small magnet out of an old hard drive. Epoxy it on something that rotates. Put a small coil near it so that a pulse is generated when it passes. I am thinking it might be strong enough to be read by the tach. If you can't find a decent coil, I have some electronic ignition trigger coils... not sure what power they generate though. If you need one gimme a hollar. Anybody know what voltage these generate?
