Dan, I started reading this e-mail, I almost didn't want to finish reading it. I was thinking oh no this is not good. But then I got to the part where your engine was running better. Congratulation, things are look up. My first experience with a VW was when I bought a used 56 Bug and it ran real strong and got great gas mileage. Then in 1965 we bought a brand new VW and I expected to get even better gas mileage. But it didn't do well at all. I took it back to the dealer and complained. They asked how many miles we had on it and I said 2500 miles. The just looked at me and said give it a chance, it isn't even broke in yet. So I wouldn't be to concerned about the 3400 static RPM, I bet after a few hours on the hobs it will do much better than that. I have been in contact with Steve Glover, he was planning on coming up to check out N522PC, but as you can see he didn't make it here today. He does have his Long Ezy back in the air, but he says he needs to get more time on it before he heads up here. It is time to renew my insurance and since Steve is listed on the insurance Pam wants his total hours flown last year and the date of his next BFR. He as sent his hours but he just keeps "forgetting" the BFR date. I e-mailed him today and told him that I just may have to make up a BFR date for him and send it to Pam. I will call him tomorrow. Looking forward to your next Black Bird update. Jim

New VW heads, 94MM cylinders, straight cam gear, all new bearings, new rods and pistons. I ran it for the first time on Monday, and was very depressed, after having done all that work and spent a gob of money, only to have an engine that was still sputtering and not idling well either. So, I told my sob story to a couple of very good engine gusy, one a local VW expert, and the other, Roy Szarafinski, of Corvair fame and the one who is building my Corvair engine with the Roy's Garage front bearing. They both told me that if, when you throttle back, it backfires, then it is too lean, and if it stumbles, it is too rich. Well, as I said, it was stumbling all over the place. So today, I re-set the mixture and did some runs. The engine now has a very smooth acceleration, will idle fairly smooth at 800rpm, and has no stumbles when throttling back. It also has NO oil leaks. I still don't see any more than 3400 static, but I think that after it is run in, it will get a better idle and more top RPM. So, within two days, I have gone from down in the dumps, to on top of the world, metaphorically speaking. After I button up a couple of things and get the cowling on, I will take off and see if I can find the top of the world. Daniel R.
