I just got a voltmeter on the battery and it is reading 5.6 volts. So
the problem is not the switch.

Either the battery has failed (it's a one-year old "new" Yuasa out of an
industrial lighting system), or there is something about hooking up a
small gel cell to a large AGM that isn't a good thing. I usually get
away with thinking of electricity as I would think about water, but that
analogy isn't working in this case. The battery had been fine for the
short time I'd had it . . . until I connected the batteries for charging
purposes.

Again . . . they both were at full charge or very slightly below when I
flipped the switch connecting them and connected the HF float charger.

I've checked the float charger and it is still working okay.

Anybody been through this?

Thanks,

Mike
