Well, I had my 60 hours for the week in at lunch today, so I headed out to a
beautiful dark blue sky and calm winds for a little flying. I flew down to a
new plant that we opened a few months ago and took some pictures, and then
dropped into Decatur airport to talk to the guy that's going to check my
transponder/altimeter calibration for me. I do have a phone, but I'd never
flown into Decatur so I figured it was a good excuse. After that I really
didn't have any plans, so I went a little further south to Hartselle. Never
been to that one either, so I did two touch and goes and wondered "what next".
Might as well go to the next one, and so I did...to Cullman, Addison, Double
Springs, Haleyville, and Moulton on the way back home, doing two touch-and-goes
at each.

While I was around Double Springs I was looking for Camp McDowell where our
kids have done time at summer camp, and asked the wife later for better
directions, because I couldn't find it. She said "when were you down there?",
and I said "about an hour ago". That's usually a two hour plus drive, so she
knew I'd been out catching up on lost flying time, and smiled. It was a great
day for it, although a little bumpy down low for some reason. I flew back at
7000', and as soon as I got above the scud layer, the plane reverted to my
favorite "lean it and it will go that way" routine. Nice and smooth, peaceful,
and the best way to fly someplace. I love autumn flying in the South.

Decatur, Hartselle, Cullman, Addison, Double Springs, Haleyville. Tomorrow I
visit my buddy in Monroeville and then over to my father's farm. What will I
do next weekend? Corvair College #12 at SC99 (Gilbert, South Carolina) of
course. It's only two hours away...

Today's picture is the approach to Haleyville airport, which was a little
scary, unless you happen to be doing 200 mph or so. It reminded me of some
kind of fortress you'd see in Germany. It's at
