Don't knock yourself out to make the canopy short.  Mine is awfully tight.
I'm maybe a quarter inch from the top.  That's partly due to my headphone
headband being taller than most, and the fact that I have about another inch
to go befor my seat is on the absolute bottom of the plane.  In short, I'd
probably make it an inch taller next time around!

I don't know about the Todd's canopy, but the Dragonfly is downright floppy
back at the rear, and will assume just about any shape you want.  And like
Dan said, square is better, if you want to be able to look down at the
scenery in front of the wing.  My sides are fairly vertical, and I still
can't see my fuel caps in my stub wings...
