Like anything, they make good ones and bad ones. I don't know that they have a bad reputation, but they did make a run of bad ones about 10 years ago, which is when I bought mine. I didn't discover that it was inaccurate by about 52% until my first flight, and that made it a pretty wild ride. In retrospect, I should have checked it BEFORE the first flight, rather than afterwards. Since the warranty was long expired, I simply had to buy another one. I don't even remember what the new one is, but it may be an UMA also. Whatever it is, it's very accurate at the high end, and off by at least 10 mph at the low end.
