I think the stuff at http://krnet.org/as504x/ should answer these questions,
including the links at the bottom such as the download, which specifies
which templates you'd use under which conditions
(http://krnet.org/as504x/templates.html). But the AS5048 root with AS5045
tip wing has been flown (if I remember correctly), I just forget who.  As
far as I'm concerned, that is the way to do it if your are building a new
airplane.  Most of us flying the AS5046 are only using it because our spars
were already built when the new airfoil became available.  The documentation
above mentions that the AS5048 is not recommended from root to tip because
of some uncertainly regarding stall characteritics, not to mention that
efficiency would probably suffer with such a thick airfoil at the tip.
Otherwise, very similar characteristics.
