A friend of mine who is an IA uses this method to check the tracking of the main gear. He places a piece of aluminum on the floor in front of each wheel. He then puts some oil on the aluminum. He then places a second piece of aluminum on the first piece. Then the aircraft (properly loaded) is pushed or pulled onto the two aluminum pieces. If the top piece slides in or out it informs him that the wheels are toed in or out. Keep in mind that some opinions vary about whether to have toe in or no toe in. Additionally this alignment should be parallel to the centerline of the a/c.
