It's not so much the horsepower as it is the weight of the engine and the speed produced, and the G loads you place on the airframe. Weight also affects the location of the C.G. If you had a 220 pound, 500 h.p. engine but kept the speed below the 200mph Vne and didn't overstress the airframe with G loads it will fly happily along. Your question should be "how HEAVY of an engine will the firewall support"? I can't answer that. Then the heavier the engine the more concerns you will have with C.G. also. Probably the heaviest installs I've seen would be some of the Sube engines such as Les Palmers KR. I'm guessing that if you firewalled the above mentioned 500 hp KR on takeoff that it would jerk the KR out from under you before it pulled off the firewall. :-) Larry Flesner
