I don't think it matters.  I just stuck mine on the
existing longeron, and I know several others have done
the same.

Why would it matter if it's "level".  It would be
easier to have a miter in one plane to install the
upper cross braces, but haveing a compound miter is a
whole lot easier in my opinion than trying to make a
consistant vertical surface to attach the doubler to.
