Yes, it will work.   but it will be difficult to asses how thick is the 
layer of  the filler.  the method described with dark primer under a 
coat of filler will tell you exactly how far you are from the surface.
If someone doesn't feel comfortable with primer between composite 
surface and filler there is another method. 
Simply use toothed trowel to apply the filler. (Like the one used for 
gluing the tiles in the bathroom.) 
Advantages:
1. you will apply even layer of filler over entire wing. Thickness will 
be limited to the depth of the cut between teeth.
2. strips of filler are easier to sand ( you are sanding only half  of 
what you would normally sand)
3. surface is visible between the strips all the time during sanding  .
4. you will fill only once more (between the strips) with straight edge 
trowel.
5. sand lightly entire thing and you are done.
