The DPDT would not work in my case. The re is no backup system as such. The two systems are meant to be operated permanently together, like magnetos. They are controlled by two separate switches, because you can start only on one of them, and I want to be able to isolate the faulty one in case of failure.
I guess I should investigate the diode solution. Most likely your tach is receiving a pulse from both systems. Some where the two systems are interconnected. Chase out your wiring to find the point that connects both systems to the Tach and separate them. Mark: Do not put a jumper between them as it will short the two ignitions together. The safest way is to switch the tach wire when you switch the ignition. That requires a separate deck on the switch but is the safest and most reliable.
