The inside of my canopy is about 17.4" above the longerons at my head
location (sorry, I haven't measured it from the spar, and I'd forget to
measure next time I'm out there anyway). I'm only 5'-10" since I had a
little back surgery and got shortened, and I fit perfectly with somewhat
tall Lightspeed headsets, but could stand an inch of freeplay. The bottom
of my seat is still an inch off the floor, so there's an inch to be gained
there, but I'd say if you are taller than 5-10, you need it higher than
17.5" above the longerons for sure. Larry Flesner has gobs of head room and
he's a tall guy, so maybe he'll chime in with his. But the bottom line is
you need to make sure YOU'LL fit, at a very minimum! I have three more
inches of vertical stab / rudder than the S plans call for, and I've been
considering hacking all three of them off, because I've yet to need full
rudder for anything other than drag-producing slips on final, but then I
haven't made that trip out west either...
