Thanks, Rob. That was pretty much my guess, although I remember that I once had a stopwach whose LCD turned black, then back to normal. Go figure.
I tried a few things, including heating the display with a heat gun. For some reason, that reduced the size of the black patch by half, and what is left is in a corner. So now, the display is not exactly pretty, but entirely readable. I can live with that until I buy another one.
