Welcome to Australia Serge. We have 2 categories here GA (General Aviation) and Utralight. I can only speak of my experience. The cost of going GA is outrageous. Going UltraLight is easy and economical. To register as an Ultralight you need to have a MTOW less than or equal to 544kg, a stall speed less than or equal to 45kts (we use knots and feet here), an inspection (which is very minimal) and about $600 (cost of inspection and registration). There are a few KR2 and KR2S already registered ultralight so there is no new ground to break there, should be real easy. Getting you ultralight license should only cost you 5 hours flying and a certificate fee of about $110. Also you will probably want a "Security" id card to be able to visit some airfields, don't know the cost on that.
The biggest restriction for ultralights is that we cannot go in controlled airspace without a PPL and the relevant training. I believe that you may be able to fly under your JAR license for at least 1 year after a check ride, area and procedures familiarisation (while you get your PPL). For Ultralight information see http://www.raa.asn.au/ Now doing it the GA way will cost much more money (I don't really know how much) and a lot more time (you are only here for 3 years, it should be registered before you leave). To be honest, I know nothing about the GA cost and timing, except that everyone complains about them and GA is shrinking here in Australia, while ultralights are booming. That's my opinion, hope it helps. If you are up my way in the Cairns area, contact me so I can show you round the area. The job assignment is in Canberra, but on family grounds, I will probably settle in Sydney, and commute.
