I have never tried the "hard shell" method, because I cannot imagine being able to get the slurry on without ridges, and then trying to sand the ridges without making divots in the foam. Don't do it without putting on the slurry as you need a barrier to the air that will cause bubbles and you need something to grab on to the pores in the foam.
