All of the WAFs that TET created and sold were powder coated. They probably required reaming to final size, which would have cleaned the paint off the ID of the hole, but I don't see how moisture could get in there anyway.
The WAFs themselves are in either tension or compression, so the bolts are in shear, so loosing a little tension due to paint chipping would not be a big deal...the wood compresses more over time that the paint thickness. Having said that, the powder coating I've had done on my engine could stand a lot more than bolt torque before it would chip anyway. I'm not sure that I've seen it chip anywhere yet, regardless of abuse. Powder painting works for WAFs, and certainly beats no protection at all...
