Bob;

Alternators work by having a winding of wire move through a magnetic field.
The magnetic field is produced by the battery current flowing through a
voltage regulator and then through the field windings in the alternator.
This being said, there is no way to have a working alternator without a
battery to supply the field winding with current.

The voltage regulator senses the output voltage and maintains it by varying
the current through the field windings to maintain a constant voltage output
with varying loads.

The old automobiles had a generator that produced pulsating DC current by
rotating a winding of wire through a magnetic field that was supplied by
permanent magnets. These required an analog type voltage regulator and were
somewhat larger than their equivalent alternators.

Hope this helps
