Jim: Former Father-in-Law worked on the flight line for Lockheed in Palmdale CA. The SR-71 was painted black to make it hard to get a visual on against the dark sky at altitude. Also told me that the fuel tanks tended to leak until the aerodynamic friction heated it up then they would fill her up and really turn it loose.
