Eric: The F-104 is even faster than the F-16 in fact I think it top speed approached that of the F-111.
Aguy I went to school with Retired from the airforce. He was an F-111 wing commander in Viet Nam and until recently flew the air show in a restored WWII fighter. His name was Col.
