I just learned that my new emergency locator transmitter has become obsolete before I got it airborne the first time. The current 121.5/243.0 Megahertz analog ELT's will no longer be monitored after February 2009. They are being replaced by a new digital system that operates on 506.0 Megahertz that will be much more accurate.
Of course, the new units will cost about ten times what the older ones cost. That will be a $1000 to $1500 investment, compared to $195 for the current ones. The details of this change are in a great article starting on page 113 of the April 2006 issue of EAA Sport Aviation magazine. It looks like I will have a 10% increase in the cost of building my KR-2. Jim Vance Claflin, KS va...@hbcomm.net
