Unfortunately, that attitude prevails here in the USA since most people
don't understand the simplicity of the metric system, where the meter is
the "yardstick", where a cube of 10cm x 10cm x 10cm has a volume of 1 liter
and when you fill this cube with water, it weighs 1 kilogramm.
