I don't know about the HVLP part, but that gun is a bargain just about any way you look at it. I've been using one for all of my primer work and little touchup jobs, and I have no complaints. I even painted the bottom of my plane with it. It came out a little dry, but I'm pretty sure that was my fault, not the gun's. The guy at the local community college loves them too, but also calls them "primer guns". He uses a $400 paint gun though, so you have to consider the source. Dan's plane was done with the Harbor Freight gun and it looks great, although he did have to polish it out (may have been pilot error like my paint job though). I think in the right hands, or with a little experience, this gun would work just fine. I should also mention that I have two DeVilbiss guns, an older one from Sears and a newer one that I used to paint my Scirroco with, and will paint the top of my plane with, so I may be talking out of both sides of my mouth here. But if money were a primary concern, I'd jump all over this thing. In fact, I'm going to pick one up on Monday in case I accidently leave some paint in the one I have or something...
