I only run one coil at a time. Since I had one failure in flight which resulted in an engine out, I was thinking that if I ran both only during critical times such as take off then I would have automatic back up if one failed. Once out of critical flight mode, I would switch to single coil.

The L and R ground that mag so when selecting L the Left mag is grounded testing the operation of the right mag, while R is grounding the right mag and testing the operation of the left mag. When selecting Both neither mag is grounded which allows normal operation. This is why Mark J cannot get it to work correctly. It will not apply positive power nor will it provide ground when selecting both, making it only good for guys running just mags. Mark J, why do you want to run BOTH coils at the same time? This cannot be good for the MSD coil switcher?!
