Definitely you should contact Mat Elder.  He is one of the only ones I know
of that is building a KR-1 right now and he is tall enough that they make
him wear a flashing red light on his hat when he is at an airport.  His will
have a Corvair and from what I have heard about it will be a screamer.

If you really want a VW you should go with something much bigger than the
1600 unless you live in a very flat area with no trees and verrrry long
runways.
