Err... my three incentives are actually like the three musketeers. Actually, there are 4 of them. And that should be 0.0185, not 0..0185, I guess.
Incidentally, I am told that cadmium plating is banned in Europe (or will be soon, I'm not too sure), on environmental grounds. Sorry for the mistakes, guys, it has been a long day. The closest AN size would then be AN6, which is 9.53mm instead of 10mm. That is a .47mm difference, which is 0..0185 inch. Considering that the current bolts are threaded all along, whereas the new ones would have a slick shank at the grip... OK, I'll buy it. That makes me think that maybe I should apply the same reasoning to the bolts that hold the engine mount to the firewall, since these are M-10 (10mm) too . My three incentives for using AN bolts instead of metric are: 1 - Can't find any metric aircraft bolts around here; 2 - Can't find standard, hardware quality bolts with an unthreaded shank either; 3 - Can't find cadmium-plated harware quality bolts; 4- Importing aircraft grade bolts from the US costs me less than buying standard grade bolts from the hardware shop, even taking into account transport and duties. Go figure! Not at all. The clamp load generated by the bolts is what holds the joint together. I mean, when you get it all bolted down to the proper torque, it's not going to slide around any more than if it was a .001" clearance. Matt Serge VIDAL <serge.vi...@sagem.com> wrote: Yep, I thought of that, but don't you think that .5mm is too much gap? My gear brackets are made of cast aluminum, and my fear is that if the legs are not tightly fit, then maybe that may induce some cracks. Then, again, I am fairly ignorant as far as metal work is concened. The holes would already be oversized about .5mm (around .020"). Then you wouldn't have to drill. Just a thought. Matt Serge VIDAL wrote: This is one is for steel specialists: My taildragger KR2 main landing gear legs are made of spring steel. They hold to the gear brackets by 4 bolts each. The bolts are metric, 10mm diameter. I would like to change that for the nearest AN size. That would be an AN7, which is 7/16", that is 11.11mm. So I would have to enlarge the holes. Now, I don't know much about steel, but I know by experience that it is very hard to drill through these legs, since 3 years ago, I tried to drill a couple of tiny holes to hold some brackets for the brakes lines, and I gave up. Questions, then: what are my chances to succeed, what kind of drill bits should I use, and what is the correct drilling technique?
