I've got the same engine. I attached a small scoop over the cooler and it
did make a difference of about 10 degrees. It did however block some of the
air flow over the cylinders, but it didn't seem to affect my CHT noticeably.
It was an experiment and I removed the scoop later simply because my oil
temp stayed in the green without it. The lower lip of the opening in my cowl
on that side is just flush with the top of the cooler. I wonder if that
contributes to something. Was also toying with the idea of cooling the
filter. I thought I saw something in a VW rod magizine years ago that looked
like a finned cover for the filter. I only have 14 hours on the engine, 1.5
in flight, the rest in taxiing...so claim no solid insight or knowledge. I
cant imagine how you could move the stock cooler below. I have seen several
set-ups with remote (after market) coolers on the firewall. The extra
complexity of piping and directing cool air to the fire wall mounting
turned me off to the idea. I have also seen a type three engine with the
stock cooler mounted on the top center line of the engine, facing directly
into the wind.
