Mine came out the bottom at about a 45 degree angle and they were about a
half inch from the front bottom corner where the firewall meets the bottom
of the fusalage.  Look at http://www.engalt.com/engine.htm at the third
picture down.  I never had any problems with it.  Obviously, the further the
better, but you do get a lot of exit air flow around the exhaust that keeps
the heat away.
