How do you check and identify the problem?
Hello Terry By design, the mag is always hot except when it is physically connected to ground. The wire that connects to the mag is a ground wire. If the wire is not connected or if the wire breaks internally (creates an open), then the mag is hot. Since you changed the switch, I suggest that you connect a wire from the mag terminal to ground an see if stops working. If so, then the problem is in the wire from the mag to the switch. Another common problem is that an unknowledgeable person will sometimes fail to realize that with an aircraft ignition switch that it is easy to wire it incorrectly. Remember that the mag does not require electricity to work, it only needs to be grounded to stop working. When you perform a mag check, the mag that is being tested for function will have an open circuit and the mag that is not being tested will be grounded. I hope this helps Orma L.
